Windows 8 on ARM to run desktop apps... but only Office

“Elsewhere Microsoft has stated that only Metro applications will be available through Windows Store - not desktop apps,” commented James Johnson on Sinofsky's post.

“This is anti-competitive and just plain obnoxious. You need to allow the user to load their own desktop software, such as a version of OpenOffice/LibreOffice recompiled for ARM.”

Sinofsky confirmed the position in an interview with All Things Digital , saying that: “There are no other compiled desktop apps that are available.”

Tablets get the desktop

The other significant revelation from Sinofsky was that tablet users would be able to switch between the Metro view and a more conventional desktop view. “Using WOA 'out of the box' will feel just like using Windows 8 on x86/64,” he said. “You will sign in the same way. You will start and launch apps the same way.

"You will have access to the intrinsic capabilities of Windows, from the new Start screen and Metro style apps and Internet Explorer, to peripherals, and if you wish, the Windows desktop with tools like Windows File Explorer and desktop Internet Explorer.”
