Talent Development for a Social Entertainment Company

Talent management and succession planning has been in practice across many organizations and studios in some form or another and I won't say it's new at all. However, most succession planning and management programs have been carried out in a very haphazard manner.

This approach has often been adopted as there has been minimal studies and literature available to guide organizations on how succession planning and management programs can be carried out successfully; even more so with studios as will be discussed later on. In addition, succession planning has been viewed narrowly as an HR based responsibility and not one that has far reaching implications to the organization as a whole and so the need to focus on this area of specialisation has increased.

Many companies and studios are beginning to realise that succession planning and management programs have to be carried out effectively in order to groom the leaders of tomorrow. If this is not done, the future of their business could be at stake. My studio provides products in the social entertainment industry sector. Social entertainment is defined as the combination of entertainment (i.e. video games, action and reward software, contests, media) augmented with social media technologies and platforms (i.e. Facebook, LinkedIn, G+) (Weide, Kevorkian, & Ireland, 2011). While I say studio in the singular sense, our global operations encompass locations at Boston, Los Angeles, New York, Qingdao, Sydney and Tokyo with associates reporting via a linear structure to their studio head and task group.
