A quiet place for couples or a loud bash?

Regardless of where you are -- Manhattan's Upper West Side cafes or Paris's Left Bank, Milan's navigli lights or the icy Bosporus -- there is a place for lovers.

The celebration of love should now be a significant one, particularly as the new year has come at a time of civil war in countries around us, and turmoil, and economic crises everywhere. All the more reason for us to bond with love. İstanbul's pace has slowed down in the snow, but that hasn't put a damper on its nightlife.

Looking into ways to celebrate this year, I asked some friends and colleagues about their favorite romantic spots for Valentine's Day in İstanbul and got a mixture of replies, some classic, some offbeat. To start with, Mikla (http://miklarestaurant.com/) is a very special place for many people. My friend Michal, a TV anchor and presenter said, “If you really want to make an impression on a girl, bring her to Mikla.” Towering over the city with spectacular views, it's been selected as the best restaurant of İstanbul year after year. Chef Mehmet Gürs has prepared a special menu, which he calls a taste menu, including local wines, for TL 210. Some of the tastes are grilled shrimp, grilled tenderloin, Kars gruyere, lamb entrecote, mustard seed mashed potatoes, along with much more, and ends up with truffle as the final dessert.
